Generations of musical fans have found themselves humming “If I Were a Rich Man” while cleaning the house. Thsis family favorite about a man and his family living in a Jewish community of Tzarist Russia at the turn of the century, has been enchanting audiences since its original 1964 Broadway production. Centering on Tevye, the father of five daughters, this musical shows how he attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions while his three oldest daughters defy him in their choice of husbands, and the Tsar evicts Jews from their village. Set during the bloody period of pogroms in Russia, this story of faith, tradition, determination, and the consequences of hate continues to find relevance in today’s world, and is certainly a tale for the ages.
